Bess Rogers - Presents Bess Rogers reviewThanks to Norah Jones and Ingrid Michaelson, under-the-radar New York City-based singer-songwriters of the female persuasion have it a lot easier than say 15 years ago. That's not to say that people weren't paying attention back in the early 90s --- they were --- it's just that ever since those two sprout up from virtually nowhere, femmes have had it a little easier.

Take for example Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Bess Rogers. Despite being on a tiny label, her debut EP Travel Back was lauded by the likes of Paste, Village Voice and others. Her newest EP Presents Bess Rogers is certain to be her coming out party, a veritable call to arms to industry suits and those who give a damn.

Album opener "Come Home," is jangly, upbeat acoustic folk-rock. Almost immediately her crystalline voice makes an impression and the entire piece bristles with polish, professionalism and charisma. Anchored by a big hip-shaking chorus, there's little reason to think the song won't be a big deal on AC and AAA radio formats. Hell, the country crowd might even embrace her, even if she does throw in some wailing horns towards the song's finish.

The shuffling mid-tempo number "What We Want," is quieter and more introspective. Her voice rises like a bell and now more than ever its apparent that voices like these just don't sit on shelves idly singing to empty saloons, they define genres, they make grand statements and they make others try harder. Rogers is blessed with that kind of voice and one has to think that the success of this EP will propel her to impact radio....full text

A few years back Ingrid Michaelson saw years of hard work turn into overnight success because of social media. Somewhere along that path Michaelson had need for a lead guitarist. Through friends she found out about Brooklyn guitarist Bess Rogers. Rogers has been on the road with Michaelson ever since. You might call this series of events serendipity. Rogers loves all styles of music, playing almost everything under the sun. Aside from a solo career and playing lead for Michaelson she is also currently the front woman of The Flux Capacitors and plays guitar and keyboards for the electro-prog outfit The Age Of Rockets. Rogers is well known in Indie circles for her instrumental work, her songwriting and her voice, but name recognition has largely eluded her outside of distinct musical circles. That all changes on September 21, 2010, when Rogers releases Bess Rogers Presents: Bess Rogers. While just a 5-song EP, Bess Rogers Presents: Bess Rogers is the sort of musical calling card that moves an artist up the ladder of notoriety by leaps and bounds. Accordingly, Bess Rogers is the Wildy's World Artist of the Month for September, 2010.

Bess Rogers runs in a circle of musicians who trade musical styles like kids used to trade baseball cards. This melting pot of musical styles helps to explain the distinct pop sensibility that Rogers embeds in each song. But Rogers doesn't just make you want to dance; you'll find yourself getting deep into the lyrical pool that Rogers creates as well, as she spins melodies with a voice that's party every-woman and part angel. Comparisons to Regina Spektor and Juliana Hatfield abound, but there are elements of Ani DiFranco and Rachel Sage in Rogers' musical DNA as well. Rogers opens with "Come Home", an incredibly catchy number that in a perfect world would light up the pop charts for weeks on end. Rogers has penned a chorus that you'll be singing along with the very first time you hear it, and delivers the vocals with such an unaffected air that you can't help but instantly like her. It's a brilliant bit of songwriting. "What We Want" plays around the edges of greener grasses with the ultimate realization that all is well. It's another catchy tune with a great melody, even if Rogers does rely a bit heavily on repetition in the chorus....full text

With confidence, smarts and an ear for a great song, Bess Rogers is poised for a mainstream breakthrough with her upcoming ‘Bess Rogers Presents Bess Rogers.’

Set for a September 7th release, the EP features the single ‘Come Home’ — check out the music here: http://www.sethcohenpr.com/player/bessrogers/ Singer/songwriter

Rogers, whose sound at times recalls Regina Spektor on speed, Juliana Hatfield, Wilco’s ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’, the GoGos and Patty Griffin, is also a multi-instrumentalist and a fearless tinkerer in the studio, evoking Prince at his impish best. She is currently on tour with Ingrid Michaelson, and will headline this Fall to coincide with her EP release (see itinerary below.)

Rogers’ music threads the line between aggression and tenderness, and those extremes give her memorable writing its firm sense of drama and wit. As for her distinctive pop/punk/folk style, she credits life on the road for honing her sharp ‘internal ear’: “Because of all of the touring and traveling I’ve been doing the past year or two, I’ve taken to writing songs in my head or out loud in the car if I’m alone. I think the song/lyrics/arrangements through in my head before taking it to an instrument.

Most of the songs on the EP were written that way and I think, as a result, the melodies and themes are strong and simple. Writing things by memory almost tests its worth: if I couldn’t remember it later I figure it probably wasn’t strong enough to begin with.” On ‘Bess Rogers Presents Bess Rogers’, listeners will have the pleasure of being steamrolled by ‘Favorite Day’ and haunted by ‘Good Enough’…a steady hand belies Rogers’ wistful, appealing fragility in ‘All In Good Fun’ and ‘What We What’…and then there’s ‘Come Home’, the album’s winning single....full text
