When then-British Sea Power member Eamon Hamilton and The Electric Soft Parade's White brothers announced they were contemplating a new project as a 'bit on the side', few would have expected it to last beyond the odd single and some haphazard festival appearances before imploding ungracefully, with the aforementioned trio retreating back to their day jobs.
Two years on, and two albums later, Brakes are not only still plodding on, but they've also unleashed one of 2006's most ambitious, eclectic and downright fructuous long players. And they've done so not against all the odds, but as total rank 5000-1 outsiders....full text |

| An older friend once advised me that the records you love the longest are the ones that take the longest to love. If they were too easy, you’d soon get bored. That guidance worked for some things (‘Trout Mask Replica’ for example) and was also responsible for me wasting far too much time on self-indulgent crap. Brakes’ second album ‘The Beatific Visions’ goes against all that advice; it has immediate appeal but I get the feeling, like their debut in 2005, that this is the beginning of a long term affair....full text |
