Duran Duran - All You Need Is Now reviewFor over a year, Duran Duran and producer Mark Ronson have compared the recording of the music that is about to hit iTunes as All You Need Is Now to the band’s early ‘80s output. Whether they’ve done the job really depends upon how you interpret all that pre-game prattle. But more on that in a moment, because when a band’s been around for more than 30 years, a little perspective can go a very long way.

The members of Duran Duran have so much tonsorial-based ozone depletion in their collective histories, it may seem odd to compare their career trajectory to that of a gritty, woozy prize fighter. But the truth is, Duran Duran have had their asses handed to them time and again by critics and an often disinterested public when it comes to their recorded works since the first few albums. Every now and again an “Ordinary World” pops up and makes everyone take notice, but for the most part Duran Duran has fought the battle for contemporary relevancy to exponentially smaller crowds.

It’s to their great credit that Duran Duran haven’t just taken their lumps and simply allowed themselves to become a greatest hits touring act, with maybe a stretch run in Vegas or Reno or some other place where “Hungry Like the Wolf” could be used to cross-market a casino buffet. They’ve certainly got the back catalogue to support the notion, and their concerts often reflect the struggle between knowing the greatest hits is what got them to where and new songs half the crowd doesn’t seem to know quite what to make of.

Now, Duran Duran have returned looking way better than they’ve got any right to, and they’re still as stubborn as ever, still refusing to sit down and shut up and stop making new music. And they’ve still got a nasty left hook, apparently, and a dancer’s gait a young Muhammad Ali would have been proud of. But first, the single, which arrives nearly two weeks before the album which bears its name on December 8: “All You Need Is Now” is an odd choice for an introductory, or at least it seems that way during the plodding verse, which comes on like a pair of mid-period Duran singles that sunk like a stone, “Violence of Summer (Love’s Taking Over)” and “Out of My Mind”. But the chorus, for the first time in a thousand albums, really does feel like that Duran Duran from days of yore, hints of “New Moon on Monday” buried deep within its DNA....full text

Somewhere toward the end of Duran Duran’s 13th studio release, All You Need Is Now, a creepy familiarity comes over. “Do you know where we are?” singer Simon Le Bon sidles up next to you in an imaginary limousine for a “Chauffer” ride into metaphoric bestiality. The song is called “The Man Who Stole a Leopard,” naturally, and it stands as the album’s most indulgent come-on; a back-and-forth with up-and-comer Kelis (she’s the leopard, see) that coasts uncomfortably atop the plodding synthesized predation of Nick Rhodes’ smirking melodic menace, that is until it ends with a BBC News reporter deadpan-detailing the fictional “controversy.” You may not be sure where you are, but you’ve been there before.

First, the baggage: It’s virtually impossible to speak of Duran Duran without a quick tumble through the by now dusty archives, the squeaky plastic of packaging and toothy Thatcherism, the screaming girls and moaning critics. For those of us who found their footing (and hair) in the dual-cassette dubs of ‘80s optimism, the chart of Duran Duran’s career – from luxury to heartache (as another band once said) then back again, sort of – provides a fitting reflection of our own increasingly nostalgic existences. One look at the crows’ feet staring back at us in that state fair double-“D” novelty mirror – later repurposed for inhalants – can be one glance too many, and all of that ambition and euphoria inspired by puberty lost in a keyboard sequence has gone the way of “Rio” and “The Reflex,” straight into the medium rotation of background office music. “Music is for kids,” we collectively grumble over our morning coffee. Getting old, then.

But not tonight.

Kicking in with a jarring schizophrenic electro-grind, Le Bon swaggers onto the set for album-opener and lead single “All You Need Is Now,” barely squeezing his legs into the leather trousers of cocksure distortion: “It’s all up to you now, find yourself in the moment,” he commands. Then that moment becomes another moment altogether. The anthemic chorus lights up like all of the CGI fireworks in the classic “New Moon on Monday” video, floating on a bed of keyboards directly lifted from that very song. Duran Duran are back, and what’s more, they’re paying tribute to themselves....full text

Review All You Need Is Now Song

The track All You Need Is Now is available and free for download only on iTunes Stores. After getting lost on the way musically, the band is back with what they do best, their own romantic new wave 80s sound with a little electro pop / rock and a modern beat. Honestly, it’s awesome. The musical harmony shines again. It has a pop dance groove that makes you want to click the replay button. The song combines some exciting bass playing with a catchy synthesizer bass line from the fantastic Nick Rhodes. A track to warm you, that makes you move. Simon’s haunting singing that we love so much are back. The song is convincing. No problem to hit the top of the charts. Produce something good and exist without the generic sound of Timbaland and Co, is a doable thing. Continue guys.. Fans, old and new, spread the word.. Duran Duran is always here.

The music video will released on iTunes on December 21st. It was shot in and around London and directed by Nick Egan (INYX, Oasis, Duran Duran’s white lines and Ordinary World, Alanis Morissette and more). Additional footage by Gavin Elder will also be available....full text
