's acoustic album is twofold, according to the star: It's a holiday-timed gift for fans who want to feel closer to their teen idol, but also a response to critics who have panned his sound as overproduced bubble-gum pop. On the former count, "My Worlds Acoustic" succeeds. It repackages the 16-year-old singer's most intimate songs from his two albums and offers new material in the form of "Pray," a treacly but well-meaning ballad that taps into Bieber's spiritual beliefs. Whether it succeeds on the second count is a trickier matter, though, mostly because "acoustic" is a somewhat misleading descriptive. The tracks "Baby" and "One Time" feature extraneous layers of congas and new age-style synths as prominently as they do guitar riffs, and the opportunity to switch up the arrangements of Bieber's songs along with their instrumentation is missed. The saving grace comes on "Favorite Girl," precisely because the track is a live recording from the truly acoustic portion of Bieber's concert. It's the one moment where you can hear all of the young artist's strengths falling in line-raw talent, maturing vocals and, of course, an all-too-valuable connection with his fans....full text |

| Def Jam, have you really not made enough money off of My World and My World 2.0? I guess going platinum twice was not enough to showcase the immense greatness of these tracks. At least that’s what the rabid fan girls will say..or scream (trust me, you can hear hundreds of them in the first track). If you are not familiar as to what this album is, it’s an acoustic compilation of songs from his first EP and first LP. Due to the nature of his music, it does not take too much work to transform his songs into acoustic format–and it shows. We are almost given the exact same listening experience. Granted, I do admit that the songs are much more enjoyable in this form, as opposed to their top 40 R&B counterparts, but come on! There is no way this album needed to happen! Justin has stated before that he made this album because he wanted to prove to people he could still sing. If you have something to prove, than release a brand new album! Don’t litter the shelves with a cheap remake of songs that were just released. The only exceptions are “Never Say Never” ft Lil Bow Wow Jaden Smith” and the feel good/future charity anthem “Pray”. Both songs have not been released on an album. As far as vocals go, it’s not impressive. Bieber is stuck in that awkward transitional phase of voice changing and probably should take a break from recording. But of course, why stop recording in the prime of your fame? Where is the money in that? Unfortunately, in the slower-ballad like songs such as “Down to Earth” (which actually has potential), JB sounds like he is suffering from a sinus infection. Many other songs just sound flat and boring. The crooning, high notes, and smoothness is gone. If Bieber was trying to prove he has the voice of a run-of-the-mill coffee shop singer, I guess he has laid down the proof....full text |

| Look, I know I’m way too old to be swooning over Justin Bieber. I get how some of you may not like him (no, I don’t) but give this kid a break. Bieber did, after all, start from a few simple Youtube uploads. You got to give it to him. Yes, anyone who attracts a swarm of screaming preteen girls can get annoying and, yes, his hair that is all the rage is really just a toque made of hair swirling in clockwise motion. Nonetheless, the 16 year old’s mentor Usher and the likes of Ludacris, Dr. Dre, Taio Cruz and even the community of 106th & Park have fully welcomed him. Part two of Bieber’s debut album, My World 2.0, reached number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, making the Canadian teen the youngest solo male act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder in ’63. Well, it’s no wonder they decided to release an acoustic version of the best hits from My World and My World 2.0 in November of 2010. Just like the previous two albums every number on the acoustic album, titled My Worlds Acoustic, are easy radio hits. The only new additions to the acoustic album are songs “Never say Never” from the soundtrack of Karate Kid, featuring Jaden Smith, and “Pray”- Bieber’s do-good track aside from his usual heartthrob jams. “Favorite Girl” is recorded live and you know so because there is high-pitched screaming in the background. The singing itself is flawless and his voice cracks in all the right places. Or maybe I’m just very forgiving when it comes to him. All very hard to say. My most favorite song is “That Should Be Me”. I often catch myself replying to Bieber. “That should be me holding your hand” – I know “That should be me making you laugh” – He’s not that funny anyways “That should be me this is so sad” – So fcking sad “That should be me, That should be me” – Yes, let’s make it happen “That should be me feeling your kiss” – Feel it “That should be me buying you gifts” – You shouldn’t have This is legal right? Compared to the original album I found the acoustic album much easier to listen to. Also, less embarrassing to be caught listening to. Moreover, My World Acoustic is more mature sounding. Perhaps due to Bieber’s lowered and cracking voice caused by puberty. But let’s not talk about his puberty. It makes my infatuation over him feel wrong. Now I’m rethinking my standards. Now I’m contemplating if I have issues. Now I’m wondering if the FBI is going to bust down my door as I’m typing this. Minus 0.25 in the album rating to an otherwise perfect album because he was not born 10 years earlier like me. A great stocking stuffer for me and any preteen/teenage girl....full text |
