And it's true; the Wyoming-based quartet has been playing their spirited brand of Ramones-esque punk rock for a decade now. After three under-the-radar full lengths, the band finally found their break in 2009 with their Fat Wreck Chords debut, They Came from the Shadows. Mutilate Me, their first release since, picks up right where they left off. The A-side features the record's title track. "Mutilate Me" is catchiest song about sadomasochism that you'll ever hear, complete with infectious "whoa-oh-oh"s, a dual-vocal chorus and a simple guitar lead. Guitarists Kody Templeman and Ray Carlisle share singing duties while drummer Brandon Carlisle and bassist Miguel Chen keep the uptempo beat. "Punk House of Horror" kicks off the B-side. The track showcases Teenage Bottlerocket doing what they do best: three-chord pop punk with equal parts in-your-face energy and melodic hooks. With descriptive lyrics like "There's a gnarly fucking grime on everything you will see inside / And a mutant form of stink that simply cannot be identified," it's difficult not to picture the foul dives in which the band finds themselves on tour. The EP's final track is a cover of Bad Religion's "Henchman." The song was originally recorded for a tribute compilation but didn't make the cut. That is not to imply negativity on the song's behalf; it's a satisfying cover of the one-minute anthem. The band's take is straightforward, but it certainly benefits from the production value that Bad Religion lacked back in 1989....full text |

| Teenage Bottlerocket released a brand-spankin’ new 7-inch, lovingly entitled “Mutilate Me,” this week (April 12th, to be exact), and it finds TBR picking up right where “They Came From The Shadows” left off. “Mutilate Me” clocks in at five-and-a-half minutes of pure pop punk performed the way it should be, and showcases TBR continuing their meteoric rise from the mean streets of Wyoming. Teenage Bottlerocket continue to prove that you don’t need to be from the Lower East Side or the East Bay to be able to pull off great pop punk music: Short, uptempo songs, call and response style lyrics, catchy guitar hooks, plenty of oozin’ ahhs. According to the band, the A-side title track from this Fat Wreck-released EP’s is about “preferring things a little rough in the bedroom.” It is infectiously poppy enough that you may catch yourself singing “I want you to/Dominate me, I want you to/Violate me” under your breath while in the checkout line at the grocery store. Just remember to use your inside voice. The first of the album’s B-sides is “Punk House Of Horror.” Shades of early Alkaline Trio, the song is appropriately poppy and fast-paced. One wonders if the song is a reference to label boss/touring partner Fat Mike’s new Vegas pad. The second B-side is a cover of Bad Religion’s “Henchman.” Generally speaking, I get a little apprehensive when newer bands cover songs by some of the punk scene’s stalwarts, but TBR definitely do justice to the original; they prove more than capable of pulling off a proper homage to the piss-and-vinegar of the original while leaving their own fingerprints all over the song. As such, it is a little less poppy than traditional TBR, but a solid, respectable cover nonetheless. In the ultimate sign of a well-made 7-inch, “Mutilate Me” left me hoping for much more new material from Teenage Bottlerocket. We should be so lucky!...full text |

| The title pretty much says it all here – Wyoming’s Teenage Bottlerocket is putting out a 3-song 7″ titled Mutilate Me on April 12 with the help of Fat Wreck Chords. The cover art can be seen (–<<–) to the left and the band had the following to say: We named the 3 song 7″ after the title track “Mutilate Me”. It’s a song about preferring things a little rough in the bedroom. The second song “Punk House of Horror” is a warning about a house you wouldn’t want to visit or sleepover. While being on the road we’ve been unfortunate enough to end up at the Punk House of Horror a few times. It smelled. We recorded the final track for the Bad Religion tribute comp, but we ended up not making the cut. The tune is “Henchman” from No Control. We are heading over to Europe in April with NOFX and Old Man Markley. We are playing with Screeching Weasel on May 27th at Reggie’s in Chicago. We can’t wait to play, and hang out with everybody!...full text |
