Now signed to the Red Bull label (Set up by the drinks manufacturer to tap into the young male audience, it says here) after being ditched...er, parting company with Island after 2008's eponymous only major release, American trio Innerpartysystem are back with six track EP Never Be Content, designed as a prelude to a full new album release later this year. Despite some of it's pretences, their debut showed glimpses of potential, at times almost matching The Crystal Method's ability to conjure up something club orientated and yet genuinely exciting that wasn't just another shade of dubstep. Fast forward three years however and that formula is most definitely showing it's age. Example? Take opener And Together, still using the cliched vocoder and bleeping along with that patented sub Daft Punk take on post-modern techo. The following Money Makes The World Go Round is little better, sounding gratingly like sequencer error, or if you prefer a million cocaine smiles and a laser pen in the eye full of boredom. It's all very noughties, and when 'System front man Patrick Nissley doesn't want to be David Guetta making stuff that sounds like it's ambition is to be licensed to a Nike advert, he's ripping off James Murphy in the laziest way imaginable, such as on the nation-baiting self flaggellation of American Trash....full text |

| Anyone who caught Innerpartysystem’s headline shows in support of 2008’s self-titled full-length was most likely struck that they had all the trappings of an arena-filling band crammed into a small venue. With a superior light show, a simply enormous sound and energy to burn, they were a riveting spectacle, and it seemed like the only thing holding them back from the big leagues was their patchy debut, which boasted a handful of great tracks interspersed with more average fare. While that record aimed for an electronica-heavy blend of dance and rock music, this time out they seem to have pretty much abandoned the guitars—or processed them to the point that they are unrecognizable as such—and focused on delivering a stirring collection that will get asses moving on the dance floors of the world. Though proceedings could have done without the Auto-Tuned vocals that crop up frequently over Never Be Content’s six tracks, the manner in which they layer and blend throbbing grooves, driving beats and often jarring electronic squeeps and woobles has a real excitement to it. Opener “And Together” and the eight-and-a-half-minute beast that is “Not Getting Any Better” sound like they could almost have been included on Daft Punk’s TRON: Legacy soundtrack, mixing electronic bombast with processed strings to great effect, and the manner in which the tracks build up, break down and explode hits the mark powerfully. “Money” and “American Trash,” while possessing decent grooves ,are somewhat less essential (the vocal melody and dirty throb of the latter sounding distinctly similar to Ke$ha’s “Boots And Boys”), while “Out Of Touch” is perhaps the track most comparable to their previous releases, its insidious tone and seductive chorus gripping from the off and perfect for radio play. Rounding things out with the mellower tones of “Squid” they once more bring their A-game, the soothing wash of synthesized sounds and an almost ethereal chorus sits well alongside its more boisterous counterparts and further demonstrates the band’s diversity....full text |

| After ditching former label Island Def Jam Music Group for Red Bull Records, Innerpartysystem kept their force and produced some of their most explosive tracks yet (almost completely on their own) with their latest EP Never Be Content. Full of glitches and loads of bass, Never Be Content is reminiscent of 3OH!3 lyrics with Deadmau5 style. The trio from Reading, PA includes vocalist/synth player Patrick Nissley, drummer Jared Piccone, and guitarist/synth player Kris Barman. All three play a part in the bands programming as well. Most of the tracks were mixed solely by the band members but Richard X (MIA) contributed a bit to the EP’s production. Though sparse lyrically, “And Together” is the powerful opening track for the EP. The various countdowns in the song leads listeners in a surprising new direction every time, whether that be towards frantic bass lines or melodic lulls, throughout its five minutes. “American Trash” is a slow burn that turns explosive as Nissley touches on the ‘American trash’ lifestyle of drugs and partying. Ironically, but not surprisingly, this is Innerpartysystem’s most popular song on iTunes. The intensely vulnerable track “Out of Touch” follows right after “American Trash,” showing the quieter side of the ‘trash’ lifestyle and highlighting the diversity of the EP. This track does not have the same chaotic, club force as the others, which helps to create a beautifully thoughtful and synth laden song. While Never Be Content doesn’t break any new ground in the electronic music world, it flawlessly follows the standards to meticulously create an engaging record with strong, distinctly sounding tracks. The EP is definitely worth your time....full text |
