Bowling For Soup - Fishin' for Woos reviewYes, not only are Texas' own Bowling for Soup still an active band, but they have just released a new record, Fishin' For Woos. After a ten years and six album with Jive Records, Fishin' For Woos marks the return of Que-so Records. The label was started by the band in 1994 to release their full-length debut, and they've now teamed with Brando Records for their eleventh studio album.

The band once again delivers their upbeat and uplifting brand of polished pop punk. As usual, their spin on the genre features a heavy focus on the pop aspect. While no one would call Bowling For Soup a punk band - you won't find any angst-ridden songs here - what's more anti-establishment than a rock band that sings about happiness?

From the opening pick slide of "Let's Pretend We're Not In Love" to the somber yet bouncy, acoustic closing number, "Graduation Trip," Fishin' For Woos is vintage Bowling For Soup. The album features the catchy tunes fans have come to expect from the band, such as the humorous rocker "Here's Your Freakin' Song" and lead single "S-S-S-Saturday." The ode to everyone's favorite day of the week includes an infectious gang vocal chant.

Speaking of classic Bowling For Soup, the band recorded a new version of "Guard My Heart" for the release. A demo of the song, originally written by basset Erik Chandler, has been floating around online for over a decade now, and frontman Jaret Reddick re-worked the tune. It has a slightly different feel than the rest of the record but manages to fit in.

"Girls In America" is a sugary pop number even by Bowling For Soup standards. Unsurprisingly, the track was co-written with Zac Maloy and Tommy Henriksen, both of whom have worked with some big names in mainstream music. Regardless, it maintains the Reddick's tongue-in-cheek lyrics, such as "American girls, I love how you blow me… away / I’d like to get inside each of you one day."...full text

Back in 2002, Bowling For Soup was witty, catchy, and likable. In 2004, with the hit “1985″, they broke through and still retained its catchy sensibilities. Here we are in 2011, and the band and their sound has not changed in the least. The only problem is that the music that they made years ago does not have the same appeal today.

Fishin’ For Woos, the surprising 11th studio album from the band, lacks just about everything a record needs to be taken seriously. Granted, this band has never been one to take on serious matters or stretch their musical wings. They have a niche, singing lyrics about issues people can relate to, complete with funny Family Guy-style cutaway references. Again they’re discussing weekends, office jobs, girls, and parties, with the only changes being some new obscure references that someone will find adorable

The first official single, “S-S-S-Saturday”, is a desperate attempt at another dose of radio glory. They talk about waiting for the weekend and hating Mondays at work, yet every day of their lives is a weekend. Sure, people can relate to it, but it sounds so fake coming from these guys again and again. You can throw this one right next to Rebecca Black’s “Friday” and await a Christian rock band to tell us the glories of Sunday (Five Iron Frenzy?), and the whole weekend will be covered, poorly.

“Turbulence”, the album’s acoustic ballad, is passable, if only because it shows a little bit of maturity. The most impressive song on the album could be the closing track, “Graduation Trip”. It’s not anything you haven’t heard before, and a large portion of the enjoyment comes from knowing the disc is almost over....full text

Bowling For Soup are back, doing what BFS do best – upbeat, uplifting, foot-tapping songs. Don’t listen to this expecting hardcore angst and stick-it-to-the-man anthems, but if you’re looking for something to make you smile and get stuck in your head then you could do worse than this. Even the morosely titled ‘This Ain’t My Day’ has bounce to it, while ‘Friends, Chicks, Guitars’ doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out what the content matter is. The surprisingly sentimental ‘Graduation Trip’ stands out, as does ‘Guard My Heart’. Nothing groundbreaking, but sure to keep fans of the band happy....full text
