Barry Manilow spent the last five years recording a series of albums celebrating the “greatest songs” of the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. (He has apparently stopped there, so no ‘90s tribute featuring a Manilow version of “MMMBop” and “Gangsta’s Paradise”.) The real buzz, though, is that the legendary balladeer is set to release a new collection of original material in June, which has Fanilows everywhere wearing out their Dr. Scholl’s in impatience. He writes the songs! To tide them over, Manilow has released Duets, a collection of decades-old songs pairing him with red-hot singers like Barbara Cook and Phyllis McGuire. If that doesn’t get you excited, he does sing “Islands in the Stream” with Reba McIntire, one of the most pointless remakes of all time. His old bath-house partner Bette Midler is here, too, hamming it up to “On a Small Boat to China”, a momentary sign of life, and Barbra Streisand makes an appearance on “I Won’t Be the One to Let Go”, which provides an always-worthwhile chance to hear her soar. The rest is intolerable schmaltz for only the most ardent of completists....full text |

| Duets is a canny compilation of duets Barry Manilow has recorded over his years at Arista. These 15 tracks span from 1980's Barry to 2008's Greatest Songs of the Eighties, so this isn't quite prime Manilow; in other words, there are no big hits but there are plenty of big names, including Bette Midler, Reba McEntire, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Vaughan, and Barbra Streisand, a cast of characters which also suggests the range of the tunes here. Barry does hold his own singing a torch song with Tormé, trading lines with Barbra, and proves a good foil for Vaughan, and he's also quite comfortable using the Association as his support on a medley of their hits "Cherish" and "Windy." It should come as no great surprise that most of this is straight down the middle of the road, because that is where Barry is at his strongest, so that makes the inclusion of the wild Kid Creole & the Coconuts duet "Hey Mambo" most welcome: it shows that when he wants to, Manilow can have some knowing fun with his Copacabana persona. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine...full text |

| Most of you already know my intense borderline creepy love for Barry Manilow. Yes, I’m 30 years old and I love Barry. Honestly, it isn’t just me because when I attended his concert a few months ago I noticed a lot of younger people there. Barry has this way about him that allows him to span the ages. He recently released a new CD entitled duets where he sings alongside other musical greats such as Bette Midler, Reba McEntire and Barbara Streisand. This is a compilation and not new music so you may have heard it before. I’ll admit that this CD was a bit old for me and a bit slow. But for that crowd who loves any and all things Barry Manilow it’s definitely one to add to your collection. Right now one of my lucky readers can win a copy of Barry Manilow Duets and listen to songs such as Islands In The Stream and Summertime at home! Just comment below.
