Action Bronson - Dr. Lecter reviewThis may be a little premature but after listening to Action Bronson’s first LP Dr. Lecter I nominate him for 2011 “Rookie of the Year.” The Queens native, appropriately deemed the “white Ghostface” reminds you of the Q-borough rap pedigree that put them on the map. Bronson kept it gully on this LP that brought me straight back to the good old days of 90’s rap where I belong. Bronson brought out his inner chef and served up killer beats infused with his non-stop breathless flow.

From the jump, the Bronsolinho sets the tone of the album. “Moonstruck” has a perfectly produced beat that sets Bronson up to release his stacked lines and leave you hungry for more. The next track’s title may look familiar to you (or not). “Barry Horowitz” was a WWF/WCW wrestler from the 90′s, so seems only fitting Bronson would honor him with a track - and that’s not just because they are both fat. Barry Horowitz was considered and underdog in the wrestling arena, being a fat white ginger in the rap game I’m sure Bronson feels he can relate. Produced by Tommy Mas, this track has Bronson spitting out methodical word play that will baffle your mind, I think I even heard a Hootie and The Blow Fish line....full text

A good new rap record? Sure, why not? Actually, scratch that. For the most part, this a great effin’ record. Action Bronson marks the return of the highly-technically character rapper in the era of caricature performers who rhyme as an afterthought. He also envisions himself as some sort of modern-day viking, verbally raping and pillaging his way across New York. Pity those unfortunate wretches in his path. Tommy Mas provides some quality non-progressive loops and drums for the big guy to unleash speech over, and rest-assured that the Outdoorsman star recruit is only just getting started. Dead the Ghostface comparisons, Action delivers a variety of techniques that are far beyond the capacity of someone who only picked-up the pen a mere three years ago.

There’s a run of four tracks in a row which really show and prove Action at his finest, beginning with ‘Barry Horowitz’ and peaking with ‘Ronnie Coleman’, which is the greatest rhyme dedicated to eating disorders you’re ever going to hear: ‘Lock the refrigerator, there’s no controlling me/steak and chocolate got their motherfucking hold on me!’ This could provide the anthem for husky bastards everywhere in much the same way that Akinyele‘s ‘Exercise’ spoke to anti-athletes. The posse cuts and features vary in quality, but seemed to take away from the flow of things a little. Most of the guests do their thing, but at this point you just want to hear the next chapter from Bronson’s twisted psyche....full text

Few times within the last several years has Hip-Hop been fully able to get excited about some new, brash and wildly talented emcee from the culture’s birthplace of New York City. All of that changed after Queens-bred, ethnically Albanian emcee, Action Bronson, released his latest album Dr. Lecter last month. Now New Yorkers and Hip-Hop lovers of all area codes have a fresh hope for the future and can be fully hopeful for this unmistakable talent’s contributions.

In recent interviews with him, Bronson states that he only just began rapping around 3 years ago, however the ease with which he flips and conjoins rhymes at breakneck pace and surgical accuracy would suggest that he’s been doin’ it since he was 8. More than anything that’s what sticks out when you hear Bronson’s music; that unmistakable talent and voice that screams “I stand out from the rest”. Many make comparisons to Ghostface Killah, which is enough of a compliment in itself, but I tend to think that Bronson’s skill is far more than any flash in the pan attempt at imitation.

Dr. Lecter jumps off with two potent jams in “Moonstruck” and the awesomely titled and performed “Barry Horrowitz”. Bronson delves quickly and adeptly into that rapid fire delivery but nothing is lost in translation. His gift for enunciating every piece of his dense verbiage absolutely glows. By the time the third track, “The Madness” ensues into it’s first minute listeners have got to already be conceding that yes, this cat is not just another mixtape phenom kidding himself…In fact, Bronson in my estimation is next up to blow and has a great deal of staying power....full text
