Doris Day - My Heart reviewThere is an undeniable thrill upon hearing the delectable voice of Doris Day once again. Technically flawless, infallibly seductive in tone, it’s hard to think of another singer of her era who offers the listener such unadulterated pleasure.

Among the 12 tracks here are reminders of her work in the 1950s and 60s, with three numbers sourced from the period when she was at her zenith. Listen out for the manner in which Day caresses the words of the meltingly beautiful song My One and Only Love, accompanied sympathetically by the André Previn Trio. Elsewhere, she brings a lifetime’s experience to bear on Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries, and her version of Hurry, It’s Lovely Up Here, a song from the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever – where the heroine, blessed with powers of extra sensory perception, discovers that she can make plants grow – is immediately lovable.

These titles are interspersed with the raison d’etre for this sort of release: a batch of previously unreleased titles. Four of them are co-written and produced by her late son, Terry Melcher. Sony don’t reveal when they were recorded, but one of them, The Way I Dreamed It, was published in 1985 – meaning Day would likely have been in her 60s at the time of its recording. Her voice may have lost some of its lustre in the intervening years, but there’s no doubting the sincerity of her interpretations....full text

Carmel Valley, Calif. -- Sony Music announced this week the release of Doris Day's first new album in nearly two decades. "My Heart" is a compilation of previously unreleased recordings produced by Ms. Day's son, Terry Melcher, prior to his death in 2004. Tracks include "You Are so Beautiful (To Me)," the'70s Joe Cocker hit, and classics such as "My Buddy," which Ms. Day originally sang in her 1951 film "I'll See You in My Dreams." Day dedicates the song to her late son.

"I was asked to choose the songs I preferred for the album," Ms. Day said from her Carmel Valley, Calif., home this week. "These are the tunes that reflect my love of animals, my love for my son. They're the dearest things to My Heart." Ms. Day chose to include "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" on the album because it was Mr. Melcher's favorite of her recordings. "And it rings so true," Ms. Day added.

Ms. Day also included a touching, spoken-word introduction to the track "Happy Endings," written and performed by Melcher. While Ms. Day occasionally records messages for her fans (which can be heard on her website www.DorisDay.com), sources close to the legendary singer and actress say this was a particularly emotional recording experience for her.

While Ms. Day has not performed in over 25 years, she is as eager about the new release as the press has been. "I'm so thrilled My Heart is generating a stir," Ms. Day said. "It's a delightful thing to give this to my fans after so many years."

Fans in the U.S. and the UK can pre-order "My Heart" through Amazon's UK division.

Even with a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement, a Golden Globe, and the Society of Singers Legend Award under her belt, Ms. Day remains active. Today a tireless advocate for animal welfare, she assisted in opening the Doris Day Horse Rescue and Adoption Center in Murchison, Tex., in May, and has been instrumental in saving the lives of many dogs and cats through the Duffy Day Lifesaving Program, named for her beloved Maltese rescue, Duffy.

She's won Grammys, she's won Golden Globes and she's become something of an icon during the past six decades or so, not least for her easy-listening singing-style and her easy-going romantic comedies and energetic musicals. She was also rather callously labelled as the 'world's oldest virgin' and 'the girl next door' by various gossip-columnists, something which Day shunned and rightly ignored with a degree of perplexed rebuttal.

Check her films out though and it's hardly surprising she was labelled as 'squeaky-clean' - "Pillow Talk", "Midnight Lace", "Calamity Jane" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much", the latter of which saw her sing one of her many signature songs, "Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be)" - none of them featured her stripping off, shagging the lead or calling someone a ****. Wholesome stuff indeed - and you have to pay props to the woman who popularized one of the most sung football terrace anthems of all time.

In 1967, Doris Day bid goodbye to the music industry with her 'final' album, "The Love Album", a selection of tracks that finally saw the light of day in 1994. On it was one of the songs re-edited for this, her first selection of new unreleased songs for 17 years. "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries" appears on "My Heart" as one of Day's personal selections on this collection of tracks recorded with her late son, Terry Melcher just prior to his death in 2004. So, doing the maths, this makes this 12-song set, her first in, ooh, 37 years, not 17.

Four of the songs were co-written with Melcher, including "Happy Endings", sung by the man himself after Day exclaimed it as a song he should tackle himself. Her spoken-word homage to him at the intro, makes this all the more personal (it does sound a bit like Chicago though). The remaining tracks are derived of jazz standards such as the pretty "My Buddy" and "My One and Only Love" and near-contemporary ballads like Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" and Lovin Spoonful's "Daydream", all displaying and belying Day's 87 years of age. The girl can sing - if you dig Rumer, you should give this a go. No, really.

A few of the songs are a bit twee in places - "Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here" and the single "Heaven Tonight" lack the orchestral depth of the rest of the album, but on the whole, "My Heart" is going to be on many people's Christmas lists come November, you mark my words. Whatever your musical preferences, you have to admit one thing to yourself - it's unlikely Cher Lloyd will still be performing and singing in 60 years, with a fraction of the dignity displayed on here....full text
