Big Business - Quadruple Single reviewWhen Seattle's Big Business were still a bass-and-drums duo, they seemed like what could've happened if Lightning Bolt decided to become an actual metal band instead of a terrifying parody of one. Like that Providence duo, Big Business made busy music-- the sort of chaotic roiling thunder that can only happen when two expert musicians decide to make as much noise as possible. But unlike Lightning Bolt, Big Business put those gifts in service of burly bellowed hooks and the sorts of hammerhead riffs that would've impressed any high-school parking-lot hessian at any point over the past 40 years. Arriving just after band members Jared Warren and Coady Willis got the call to join Dale Crover as the Melvins' new rhythm section, 2007's Here Come the Waterworkswas a piece of larger-than-life fists-up power-rock that would've nevertheless fit in just fine in any of the nation's finer dusty DIY noise-rock warehouses.

Since that album, Big Business have doubled their personnel-- one guitarist joined before 2009's Mind the Drift; another jumped on board last year. But on both Mind the Drift and the new Quadruple Single EP, Big Business' mission remained admirably unchanged, its focus squarely on the thudding, juddering roar of that Warren/Willis attack. On Quadruple Single, the guitars seem to be largely extraneous-- tinny squiggles that only take away attention from the primordial scuzz that still anchors the mix. If anything, the new guys seem to be on board for backing-vocal duty more than anything else. And when opener "Always Never Know When to Quit" bursts into a gloriously hooky bridge, the extra voices succeed in making an already-huge sound even bigger....full text

Like its namesake, Big Business pretty much does what it wants. Lately, that laissez-faire attitude has led to the band permanently loaning half its members to the Melvins, building its lineup from two to four, and releasing its own records: Quadruple Single marks the launch of the group’s own label, Gold Metal, and it’s also the first Big Business disc featuring new guitarist Scott Martin. Martin lays down the blankest of noise in the feral 400 Blows, and he brings that corrosive chaos to Quadruple Single’s four songs.

“Always Never Know When To Quit” is a meaty helping of the group’s trademark, open-throttle sludge, while “Guns”—with its infectious refrain, “Guns are better than everything else”—displays Big Business’ illicit affair with twisted melody. “Ice-Cold War” is more of a riff-flexing placeholder, but it only makes the EP’s high point, the choppy, catchy “City Ham,” that much more of a bulldozer by comparison. Throughout, Martin wrings squalls, squeals, and a rat’s nest of tortured notes out of his frets, dressing the band’s majestic shit sandwich with a schmear of battery acid. If Quadruple Single is an accurate indicator, this could be the start of something beautiful. Make that beautifully ugly....full text

Anyone thinking the addition of a second axeman might place Big Business in ‘typical’ rock band territory still has a lot to learn. First of all, said guitar wrangler is Scott Martin of Crom infamy (check out their magnificent ‘Cocaine Wars’ odyssey or die a pathetic loser...) and, duh, second of all this is Big Business we’re talking about. It’s still heavy, still weird and Jared Warren still sounds like a water buffalo gargling turpentine, and while there might just be four tracks to be had they’re still more kingly than 99 per cent of whatever else is calling itself ‘rock’ music these days...full text
