Tom Russell - Mesabi reviewThe title of Tom Russell’s new album, Mesabi, refers to the Mesabi Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota, one of the world’s largest deposits of iron ore, a cold, inhospitable place where hard people do hard work. But in Russell’s world, and that of many fans of modern music, the Mesabi Range and the nearby town of Hibbing stand for something very different, even mythical: as Russell puts it, that region is “the Bethlehem of the Troubadour Kid”, Robert Allan Zimmerman, or, as he later renamed himself, Bob Dylan.

Dylan is one subject of this compelling album’s title song; Russell himself is another. Supported by a rock solid backbeat and elegiac Tex-Mex trumpets, Russell draws universal parallels between Dylan’s upbringing in small-town Minnesota and his own in a Hispanic part of Los Angeles. He imagines Dylan sitting up late at night listening to Howlin’ Wolf on the radio, then remembers himself in the same position, playing “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” on his Uncle George’s record player. He imagines both he and his hero went to sleep with the same prayer on their lips: “Please don’t make me do the work that my father did.”...full text

The broad landscapes created by Tom Russell for Mesabi are inhabited by characters we all know - Bob Dylan, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor - and some we may not: the now-obscure, once well-known singer Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards, the tragic Disney child star Bobby Driscoll and the character actor Sterling Hayden....full text

For the singer-songwriter’s latest work, Tom Russell stocked-up on plenty of big name collaborators, inviting artists including Lucinda Williams, Van Dyke Parks, Sir Douglas Quintet keyboardist Augie Meyers and Calexico to join him during the recording process. Russell’s open-book policy shines throughout his twang-tinged compositions. On “Mesabi,” a well-proportioned blend of horns injects a welcomed jolt of emotion into its chorus of guitars, successfully reminding us that just because he’s amassed a loyal audience, Russell isn’t interested in sticking to a cookie-cutter formula....full text
