This is one of those obscure bands with more splits and EPs than studio albums. Enough said. Before we proceed any further, let’s make a guess. Which country is this band from? Oh, Sweden you say? How right you are! The Entombed-ish logo, the bleak and morbid cover art, and the general sense of dread you feel just from looking at this overall package of revolting imagery are all, in fact, good signs! As with the trend of good ol’ skull-crackin’ death metal being produced in modern times, Nominon is yet another band playing in the old school Swedish death metal style while hailing from Sweden themselves. I just cannot stop emphasizing on that. No matter what Possessed and Morbid Angel zealots might say, Sweden still continues to deliver some of the finest ‘90s death metal around, just like how she did back in the days of the underground conquests led by the legendary Swedish death trio of Entombed, Dismember and Unleashed. When one speaketh of the unholy and blasphemous art of old school Swedish death metal, it is heresy and death by inverted crucifixion to forget about the buzzsaw. Yes, that ever quintessential buzzsaw tone. Old school Swedish death metal would be like stale Coca Cola without it. That also happens to be one easy way to identify this genre, by the way. Staying true to the “kvlt” image Nominon has built up for themselves over the past 18 years, they certainly do not disappoint old timers on this fourth studio excursion. Grating riffs abound, the bass can be felt but can’t really be heard on most tracks (like anyone really cares), the slightly < 200BPM drums are trying to make you doubt the degree of humanity in the monster whacking it out behind the set, and an all too familiar-sounding kind of disgusted voice pukes into your ears, failing miserably to literally communicate its don’t-mess-with-me-and-screw-commercial-stuff attitude to you, but making up for that with its equally understandable sound of absolute abhorrence at all things nice and happy....full text |

| Along with Evocation, Fleshcrawl, Bloodbath and such, Nominon is definitely one of the more qualified and experienced purveyors of old school Swedish death metal, with past and present members serving in a host of underground and large name bands (Marduk, Thy Primordial, Incinerator, Choronzon, In Aeternam, The Legion, Bergraven and many more). The band really came into their own with their third effort, 2007s Terra Necrosis, as it was one of the better Stockholm homages of late, even adding a little more aggression and Grave love to the tried and true formula. However, some line-up changes have occurred since Terra Necrosis, and it shows somewhat, most notably in the vocals, where Daniel Garptoft has been replaced by guitarist Erik Sahlström on a majority of the tracks. While his voice is serviceable, Sahlström has a more thrash-based, higher-register throaty roar thats lacks the oomph and menace required for this style of death metal, although he has a nice growl here and there (“Kevorkian Exit”). (Eviscerated’s Henki Skogge has apparently taken over on vocals since recoding this album.) Luckily, the music has retained the early Grave sense--raw Stockholm death metal with a primal rumble and fetid blast beats delivering mid-range filth--that fans of ‘that’ sound will revel in, although to these ears, that sense seems to have been lessened just a tad, at least production-wise. Song-wise, the balance is between churning, distinctly Stockholm grooves (“Undead Beast”), steady canters and a few suitably ragged (in a good way) blast beats (“Mountain of Hate,” “Worm,” “Omen,” "Archfiend"), and all of it with the unmistakable Stockholm scrawl and mood that you just know when you hear (i.e. the mid-section of” “Mantra Reverse,” "Archfiend" and “Worship”). On the whole, though, while it's a very solid Swedish styled death metal album, Monumentomb is a slight step back from Terra Necrosis, and I’ve been more apt to throw in the recent Black Breath album for my fix of this style in 2010....full text |

| It is a bit odd that I haven’t heard Sweden’s Nominom. They’ve been around since 1993, when I was just a wee metal lad, discovering the merits of Carcass, Brutal Truth, and their ilk. And while perhaps the name was heard in the venerable annals of metal, it is not recalled by this metallion. The ranks of metal run deep, however, so it is not a big surprise. Just in recent years I discovered the intense and ever-evolving Immolation, so there’s always a wealth of metal to discover, and new interpretations of heavy to be explored, to make me forget I have tinnitus before I go to sleep. Nominon, who’s name I keep spelling with one too many m’s and one too few n’s (and have some trouble pronouncing), is a very traditional death metal band, from what is gathered on their new release, the aptly titled Monumentomb. My first reaction was thus: the guttural utterances were quite clear and up front in the mix for the established genre which they cling to with a cold, yet deathly firm grip. Off the top of my skull, or perhaps more correctly stated, brain, I hear some David Vincent influence in the vocalizations. The level of clarity is there, so that you can actually hear what he is saying, and vocalist Henke Skoog definitely has some death metal forces going on behind his breath. But for this metal guy’s ears, it would be more effective buried in the mix, letting drummer Perra Karlsson and the rest of the band shine....full text |
