Tegan and Sara - Get Along reviewAt this point, more than 15 years into a career, audiences know what to expect out of Tegan and Sara. Their first live album and their seventh studio album, Get Along is unlikely to change one’s opinion about the Canadian twins, but for fans of the group, Get Along’s collection of acoustic songs is a worthwhile purchase. Being a live album, Get Along brings nothing new to the table, but it’s shows an interesting perspective of the Quin sisters.

Tegan and Sara have always had a punk energy and anger about them, from 2000’s This Business of Art to the more recent Sainthood. Get Along, on the other hand, brings a more subdued environment to the twins’ music. Most songs are simply arranged for the acoustic guitar, with bits of infrequent percussion and harmonies. It’s a stripped down and bare collection of songs that offers a raw look at the music of Tegan and Sara.

What are not lost are the twins’ pop sensibilities—the hooks are still present in the music; not surprising considering the material has not changed. But, the acoustic set lets the twins give a more emotional performance. Vocals are not perfect—they sometimes break and there is a lo-fi vibe to the entire album. Yet, this is part of the charm of a live set. The artists are allowed to show another side of themselves and take risks that otherwise would not be made. In this aspect, Get Along is quite successful. In particular, for the setting and instrumentation, “Call It Off” shines from the emotion clearly present in the twins’ harmonized vocals....full text

Tegan & Sara have spent the past 13-plus years writing and performing their brand of earnest guitar pop to what has grown to become a pretty sizeable fan base.

However, the twin sisters, who have done time opening for Neil Young and release music on a major label, have managed to maintain the type of cult following that’s generally garnered by a band half their size. This can mostly be attributed to their hearts-on-their-sleeves lyrics and the personal relationship they continue to engage in with fans, including designing much of their own merchandise and making sure every tour and show is special. Sure, Tegan & Sara write undeniably catchy songs, but a lot of their success and longevity can be attributed to their loyal fans, and they know it.

Get Along, the Canadian duo’s new CD/DVD package, is presented as a reward to those that have stuck by their side all these years. Fans get a personal look at the band on the road over two separate documentaries, and a live DVD and CD find the band playing an intimate show before family and friends in a Vancouver studio.

The 15-track live album is a testament to what a polished act they have become. The stripped-down and mostly acoustic versions of their stronger songs, like “Alligator” from 2009’s Sainthood and “I Won’t Be Left” from 2004’s So Jealous, play with more emotional charge than their album-cut counterparts, while “I Hear Noises” and “Relief Next to Me” showcase the sisters’ uncanny prowess for writing infectious, hook-heavy pop music....full text

The kind of people who would buy a Tegan and Sara DVD are probably already unswayable in their opinion that they are going to like it. Seriously, it could be two hours of the twins shopping for lightbulbs, and it would be devoured and screen-capped by women, girls and hopelessly, tragically infatuated men spanning six different continents.

That said, I can honestly say that Get Along, which features two mini documentaries, a full-length concert performance and a CD containing an audio rip of the show, is, objectively, quite good. While the packaging boasts that it contains “15 Tegan and Sara classics,” I am not of the opinion that songs released in 2009 can be constituted as classics. Still, it’s a fair representation of all the Canadian duo has to offer, spanning from 1999’s Under Feet Like Ours, to their most recent release, Sainthood. While I would argue with the word choice of “classic,” I would be apt to describe Get Along as a greatest hits album and the accompanying DVDs as a good introduction for the uninitiated. The fans, however, when confronted with the robust packaging of the deluxe edition, which includes three signed lithographs and a smattering of unreleased material, will potentially experience a serotonin explosion in their brains upon delivery.

It’s hard to distill something that comes in different bundles aimed for people with varying degrees of fandom, but Get Along can definitely be appreciated on multiple levels. Its most basic format—the one that contains only the audio CD—serves as a wonderful introduction into Tegan and Sara’s estrogen-drenched power-pop stylings. However, as the live tracks don’t sound much different than their studio forms, those who own the source material already might want to skip out on the album and go right for the supplemental material....full text
