Gucci Mane - BAYTL reviewIt's hard to determine what the biggest surprise is regarding BAYTL: that it wasn't a joke, or that it isn't a joke. As far as the former goes: Yes, this thing exists. Gucci Mane, once one of the most prolific and popular rappers in the South, has done a full album with V-Nasty, the Kreayshawn sidekick who's famous only for being a white person that has vigorously defended her usage of, and her further right to use, the n-word. As for the latter, BAYTL is a surprisingly competent and sometimes fun low-stakes rap album, far from the disaster it could've been.

Though there are many ways in which the album might have gone off the rails, it's fairly easy to pinpoint why it often succeeds. One major reason is that Gucci and V-Nasty smartly decided to let underground big shot Zaytoven-- long one of Gucci's favorite and most fruitful collaborators-- handle the lion's share of the production. His beats are workshops in space and melody, stretching keyboard notes (that mimic organs) like they're taffy until the rappers have a melodic, yet unobtrusive, canvas to paint on. In Gucci's heyday the two were a constant source of gold, with Zay's production pairing harmoniously with Gucci's playful, inventive flows. On BAYTL, Zay is probably asked to carry too much of the load, and his effectiveness becomes dulled over the course of the album. But allowing him to produce nearly the entire record brings professionalism, cohesion, and coherence to a project that threatened to have none of the above....full text

One of the things that makes Hip-Hop so entertaining is the level of unpredictability contained within it. Thanks to music opening doors for everyone and the revolution of the Internet, there are things that can happen now that originally seemed to be unthinkable or even ludicrous. For instance, Meek Mill might not have been here if it wasn’t for Twitter blowing up Rick Ross’ mentions of him on Twitter. Jay-Z and Kanye might not have been able to pull Watch The Throne without building hype through the Internet reporting on their listening sessions.

However, for every reasonable explanation, there’s always one unexplainable item that is unable to be rationalized, no matter how you attempt to tackle it. In one of the more confusing moments of 2011, it was announced that Gucci Mane and White Girl Mob representative V-Nasty would be teaming up to release a joint-album entitled BAYTL. It sounded like a bad idea at the time, and now that the LP is upon us, that doubt is reaffirmed in almost every way....full text

The n-word loving Kreayshawn sidekick and White Girl Mob member V-Nasty teams up with ice cream-loving Gucci Mane to make a collaboration that no one asked for. Although the pairing comes as a surprise, the mixtape boasts unimaginative lines that fall flat. In fact, BAYTL can only be appreciated if looked at for its sheer novelty appeal, thanks to V-Nasty’s laughable attempts at rapping.

At one point she claims she’s “more hood than David Banner” (Banner took issue with her nonchalant use of the n-word), and from then on it’s obvious that she can’t be taken seriously. On every track her obnoxious and nasally voice overshadows what could have been a win for Gucci, had he dropped the Bay Area brat from his ATL style. As if her act isn’t already unconvincing, so too are her over-the-top wannabe bad bitch rhymes that obsess over “bitches selling pussy” more than even Gucci himself cares to.

The Ice Cream Man, for the first time, throws some variety into his syrupy slow rhymes, which is enough to make him look like Biggie Smalls reincarnated next to V-Nasty’s lack of talent and originality. Simplistic beats powered by long-time Gucci collaborator Zaytoven suit him well, and he sounds comfortable on each track. He gets extra points for some of the clever (for him) lines he delivers, such as, “I’m not romantic but I cook my dope candlelit” (“Out My Circle”). Still, it’s not enough to save BAYTL from being just another unnecessary, forgettable mixtape.

Play this once for the WTF-moments (Gucci: “You know she gobble on my balls like they crunch n’ munch”; V-Nasty: “No need for a preacher. Pray to me. I’ll be your father”), and then be glad the end of the year is almost over, so we can put this all behind us and forget about it....full text
