 One of the reasons so many bands have looked to the early '80s for inspiration lately is because the sound of post-punk and new wave—in all its melancholy and dreamy romanticism—can be oddly comforting to people who grew up in that era. In terrifying times, there's nothing like the Pretty In Pink soundtrack to give people hope and make the difficult sound simple. | Very rarely does an album come along that produces intelligent lyrics, solid, harmonious sound, and an all-around classically good feel in such a combination that it almost seems too good to be true. | Electric guitar chords as sharp and tightly coiled as razor wire. Bouncy but insistent percussion that calls for dancing but not attention to itself. Adventurous bass lines. Lilting melodies. A vocalist with just enough weariness and age to muddy otherwise forthright vocals. I almost wish I was talking about the new Strokes record, but the honor belongs solely to Maritime....full text |
