Listening to 'Mcluskyism' is rather like sitting with your funniest, long lost mate in your pub of choice, supping your preferred draft tipple and chuffing on a pack of high tar duty free fags said chum has generously brought back for you following a three year trek across North Africa with only a Swiss army knife and an imaginary friend called Ethelred for company. And this, of course, is on the first anniversary of the day you went tearfully mewling to Alcoholics Anonymous, and a week since you gave up the old chokes because of your doctor's ominous doom-mongering....full text |

| The snotty Welsh trio seemed to have a lot going for them. First, an only slightly off-putting punkish rock sound that started as a knowing nod to Shellac, Jesus Lizard and, infamously, the Pixies, and developed to a unqiue furthering of that sound by the time the band had unleashed their leviathan coda, The Difference Between Me and You Is That I’m Not On Fire (2004). Second, the ability to form songs that were equal parts transcendent and giggle-inducing, booby-trapped with vicious hooks. And finally, but really most importantly, that attitude, that ridiculous, nasty sense of humor that added venomous bile or acidic hilarity to the bite of their massive pop hooks....full text |
