Rye Rye - Go! Pop! Bang! review The exclamation marks in the album title only hint at the emphatic nature of the debut album from longtime M.I.A. sidekick Rye Rye. The Baltimore rapper is a spaz extraordinaire – a party girl, smack-talker and dance-floor commandant whose unflagging energy lifts even the least of her material. Not that there’s much heavy lifting to do: Go! Pop! Bang! is clattery electro hop, with beats from top producers (Pharrell Williams, Bangladesh), and cameos from Akon, Robyn and M.I.A., who turns up in "Better Than You," trading boasts over a sample from the musical Annie Get Your Gun. But the funny, fleet-tongued Rye Rye is the star – boasting, dissing, entreating, commanding, comparing herself and her boyfriend to cartoon ducks. "You be Donald," she tells her lover, "I'll be Daisy."

“Go! Pop! Bang!” was delayed for years for numerous reasons, including Rye Rye taking time off to have a baby, and during that time, there was a femcee boomlet of sorts. The last four years have brought us Azealia Banks, Kreayshawn and, most notably, Nicki Minaj, but the slightly more crowded field only serves to show how special Rye Rye is.

Because “Go! Pop! Bang!” has been in the works for so long, a lot of it is familiar (you’ve heard “Bang,” with M.I.A., even if you don’t know you have). But Rye Rye’s super-speedy, old-school raps — guys, dancing, partying and friends are her favorite topics — are still charming, and the breakbeat-and-bass-heavy production (handled here by Diplo, Egyptian Lover and others) is always infectious....full text

Go! Pop! Bang! is the début studio album by American rapper Rye Rye. It was released on N.E.E.T. Recordings, an imprint of Interscope Records. The album was originally scheduled for release in 2009, however has since been delayed several times. On May 3, 2012, Rye Rye confirmed a deluxe edition for Go! Pop! Bang!

Recording started in 2008, with mentor and label boss M.I.A. at hand. M.I.A. took a pivotal role in recording at first, helping produce and write tracks while bringing in hip-hop producer Arabian Prince and dance music veteran Egyptian Lover to help record the album.[2] Together they helped to mix tracks such as "Bang". Rye Rye's first official single was the M.I.A.-produced "Sunshine".[3] However, Rye Rye became pregnant in 2009, postponing the release of Go! Pop! Bang!. This would set in motion a series of delays which have to date prevented the album's release. Even so, Rye Rye continued to create music during this period, working with music producers Bangladesh and Pharrell....full text

The album kicks off with the track “Drop” which makes me want to do just that as soon as I hear the beat. Seriously, this song was made for grinding at the club. Rye Rye gets her dance club on when she teams up with Porcelain Black for the killer track, “DNA.” Porcelain’s vocals sound amazing on the chorus and Rye Rye brings it home in the verses. I would love to see more from this duo in the future. Hip Hop producer Bangladesh works his magic on the track, “Hotter” which matches his signature beats perfectly in sync with Rye Rye’s quirky lyrics. The last two tracks don’t disappoint with the hype “Dance” which I saw her perform live at White Party this year and the killer collaboration with Tyga titled “Shake Twist Drop.” All in all, the album is sure to get you ready for the club, take you all the way there and then drop it low when the DJ drops the heater.
