 One look at True Magic will tell you that Mos Def has nothing to hide up his sleeve. In a rap game that seldom believes that less can be more, the Brooklyn rapper has issued a disc that embraces that notion -- literally, figuratively and even conceptually.
Def's third solo album arrives in the simplest of packages: A clear plastic case with no cover art, no booklet, no lyrics, no credits, no pictures, no nothing. | If KRS-One hadn't taken it first, Mos Def deserves to title an album The Sneak Attack. Following The New Danger's sparse at best promotional campaign, Mos Def snuck into the last days of 2006 with the quietly released True Magic (Geffen). Released with no inserts or artwork, the Brooklyn MC/Rock Star/Actor triple-threat may be making an artistic statement, or just a De La Soul-like attempt to get kicked off a label. | There's more than a little griping in hip-hop circles these days, and not just from disgruntled older listeners, hungry for something "fun" that resembles the refracted memories of their youth. Fans are hungry for an MC they can genuinely admire-- one who doesn't resort to moral backpedaling, misogyny, foolishness, or even guile. An honest guy, but not just an everyman. A super-everyman.
