For their name alone, Southern Culture On The Skids have too often been dismissed as a novelty act, even during alt-country's peak years when most anything that sounded more "country" than Lonestar or SheDaisy could find an advocate. To their credit, the trio—multi-instrumentalists and dual leads Rick Miller and Mary Huff, and percussionist Dave Hartman—remained impervious to such dismissals, continuing both to throw buckets of fried chicken into the crowds at their shows and, more importantly, mature into a band with a singular trademark sound that owes as much to blues and rockabilly as it does to classic country....full text |

| This record is founded on notions like “what would happen if George Jones and Tammy Wynette played with T Rex?” Or, “what if Pete Townsend played banjo?” I haven’t picked up a SCOTS album since 1996’s full-length debut, which was impressive for the way it mashed garage-rock and supercharged bluegrass with the country music the band had grown up with in North Carolina and Virginia. | First time I read the word "countrypolitan," it was Ray Charles' landmark collection of country and western classics, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music (from whence came his distinctly stamped covers of "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "You Don't Know Me"). As used to describe Charles' 1962 LP, the term suited the man's urbane blend of big band sounds with the likes of Hank Williams & Don Gibson, though it would later morph into a catch-all label for a blander brand of Nashville pop....full text |
