Eleven meditations on the fleeting nature of existence filled with china-delicate melodies, sparkling acoustic chords, and surrealist imagistic verse. Song titles include “Emile’s Vietnam in the Sky,” “Night and Liquor,” and “It’s a Sad World After All.” On first examination, it’d be easy for naysayers to dismiss Perkins as another whiny white guy in the vein of Bright Eyes, bitching about how much life sucks despite running trains on half the B-list actresses in Hollywood....full text |
| | Treble | | Before I had read Elvis Perkins' bio, I had just assumed his name was a stage moniker, a memorable and snappy homage to '50s rock `n' roll heroes. Turns out it's actually his real name; Perkins is in fact the son of actor Anthony Perkins (and presumably no relation to Carl) and photographer/actress Berry Berenson. So it's probably not coincidence that his name bears the mark of showbiz, though it may be coincidence that he went into music, rather than the family business of acting. Based on the lovely, rustic folk-rock numbers on his debut album, Ash Wednesday, however, his choice was definitely not a misguided one....full text |
| | RollingStone | | Elvis perkins has a legitimate claim to the melancholy-singer-songwriter thing: His father, the actor Anthony Perkins, died of AIDS when Elvis was seventeen, and his mother was killed on one of the planes on September 11th, 2001. Perkins alludes to his past obliquely, but it's hard to avoid -- for one, the album title appears to refer to the day after 9/11. "While You Were Sleeping" has a trancelike feel and chilling lyrics ("I made a death suit for life/For my father's ill- widowed wife"). Most tracks stick to a downbeat, acoustic-folk template, although "May Day!" sounds like a lost Neutral Milk Hotel hoedown....full text |
