Antibalas are a small army of Brooklynites who make freewheeling, action-packed music inspired by the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. The twelve-member-plus collective's fourth album offers jazzy Afro-Latin jams that are intricately assembled and totally rock in spots. | Big name producer works with big (at least in size) band to make said band's most diverse album to date...that's the premise here, anyway, and it's one that ultimately works in practice as well as in theory. The band is Antibalas, a 12-piece ensemble who specializes in Afrobeat (most often associated with the music of Fela Kuti), and the producer is John McEntire of Tortoise and The Sea and Cake, who has also worked with dozens of artists including Stereolab, Smog, Teenage Fanclub, and many other notable indie and post-rock groups over the last dozen or so years....full text |

| Antibalas sound sort of like Fela Kuti’s simmering Afrobeat like the Killers sound sort of like Bruce Springsteen like Bruce Springsteen sounds sort of like Phil Spector or the Stooges sound like Little Richard or Sonic Youth sound like the Stooges or digital wind sounds like analog wind. Discussions of influence always reach an absurd vanishing point no matter how much good a sturdy comparison can do. So saying Antibalas sounds like Fela is as boring and accurate as good accounting work....full text |
